INDUSTRY BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced a worldwide stress on medical infrastructure facilities, including sourcing medical equipment, treatment supplies, and most importantly, well qualified medical professionals. An unexpected number of new medical professionals are entering the highly understaffed medical sector to match the increased demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem is training. New medical professionals must adapt to working long hours in a stressful environment with low tolerance to error and high risk of hazardous exposure. Preparing such professionals require regular and effective training sessions that are applicable in real-life scenarios.

In response to these challenges, the healthcare industry utilizes the latest hardware and software technologies to develop effective training sessions including patient, nursing, and surgical simulations. Advanced simulation designs may contain a combination of modules such as monitors, control tablets, defibrillators, ventilators, patient chart module and CPR feedback module, etc.

Project Requirements

Our partner in the medical education industry is looking for a network gateway for each medical simulation set. The simulation set requires real-time BLE communication between modules and uploading all data to the cloud network. The requirements are:

  • Network Reliability
  • All hardware and software used within any critical infrastructure industries must be highly reliable and thoroughly tested before deployment, to minimize the risk of delayed treatments due to faulty or defective equipment.

  • Secured Connection
  • The healthcare industry has a relatively high cybersecurity risk in comparison to other industries because it contains detailed and sensitive personal data from patients, so all network devices within related facilities must be highly secured.

  • Convenient deployment
  • The network device should be easy and quick to deploy upon first usage, even to a medical professional with no prior knowledge of network devices. The device must also be portable and small to fit within a simulation package.

The challenge of this project is having a single powerful device with a wide range of necessary features including remote device management, failover network, network security, ease of deployment and storage convenience.

Solution

In response to these challenges, we have selected the device Spitz GL-X750 dual-band router. It is equipped w ith a 4G LTE module for a failover connection in case of network interruption of the Wi-Fi network, or to be used independently from the facility's network.

Spitz GL-X750 runs on highly customizable and open source OpenWrt operating system. Before the shipment, the firmware of each device is pre-programmed to be ready to use upon deployment without an initial setup. In addition, each Spitz GL-X750 device is pre-installed with VPN encryption, supporting 30+ VPN services, and is only compatible with its designated simulation module to minimize security risk from external connection.

Since each of our partner’s simulation package contains a separate Spitz GL-X750 unit, the accumulated number of devices are difficult to manage. In this project, the Spitz GL-X750 operating system is remotely managed using GoodCloud, for configuring settings, regularly updating firmware, and monitoring network analytics.

As a result, Spitz GL-X750 is currently providing reliable and low latency network to medical training simulation packages for medical professionals.
